What’s Spiritual About Being Human?

I follow Western Sem professor Chuck DeGroat on Twitter. A few weeks ago, right around Christmas time, he tweeted:

Chuck DeGroat tweetAnd I’ve been mulling it over ever since. It’s gotten me to thinking about what it means to be spiritual in today’s day and age. I’ve written about this in previous posts. I’ve looked at the desire for many of us to be spiritual. In fact, in this day and age, being spiritual is something people strive for. Many people want something greater than themselves. Many people want to transcend the mundane and move toward something better, something greater than themselves.

But what if being more human is the way to being more spiritual. Chuck DeGroat states that “The Incarnation reminds us that becoming more human may just be the key.” What does that mean? Well, the Incarnation is in reference to Jesus. On that first Christmas day, Jesus came. God in the flesh. God came down and lived amongst us. He dwelt amongst us.

And we are to ask ourselves why is that so important? We want to transcend the mundane, this world, we want to be better than what is around us. Even those who say there is no God want to be the best at being human as possible. There is a drive to be better than what we are. And in God becoming human, we see that being spiritual also means being human.

We’ve been made in the image of God. We’ve been made hardwired for spirituality. We’ve been hardwired to strive for something greater, for something better than ourselves. And we find this in following God through Jesus. And what’s so important is that we find our Spiritual fulfillment in Jesus who is God made flesh.

What’s more, Jesus came and died, and rose again, and then ascended, was lifted up, into heaven. There is a bit of earth in heaven. And after Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit came and dwells within those who follow Jesus. There is the bit of earth in heaven and the breathe of heaven here on earth.

And so, in order to be more spiritual, we begin by being human. We begin by seeing who we are and who we are to be in Jesus.

If you want to be spiritual, look to the one who was the most spiritual, because not only was he God in the flesh, but he was filled with the ultimate Spirit, the Holy Spirit. And you too can be filled with the Holy Spirit when you learn about following Jesus and walk as he walked–in the humanity that he was.

Jesus is human. He is human and God at the same time. Trippy stuff to say the least, but it makes sense when you allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life and help you learn what it means to be fully and completely spiritual.

If you want to be spiritual, start with where you’re at. Know that God became human so that you can have God present in your life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit you can be full of the Spirit and truly know the power of the Spirit in your life.

To know what it means to be spiritual, start with being human. Start simple and move forward. Start with the fact that Jesus came, lived amongst us, and is now in heaven. Know that he is with you know by the Holy Spirit.

In our spirituality, we learn what it means to fully follow Jesus–the true most spiritual person because he is fully God at the same time as being fully human. Embrace that first in your journey to becoming more spiritual. When you do, you’ll begin to understand the importance of relying on Jesus, both man and God, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in your own spiritual life.
