Thor and Spirituality

thor-hemsworthI haven’t seen the movie Thor: The Darkworld yet. I don’t know when I will. When you have an 8 year-old and a 5 year-old at home, it’s hard to always get out and see movies like that. I’ve seen Planes and The Croods but not Thor: The Darkworld. I own the first Thor though. Thor’s always been an interesting character, especially in Marvel comics. When they brought in the Norse and Greek gods, it added a level of spirituality to the comics that hadn’t been there before.

What do I mean about a level of spirituality? Well, they’re gods. They’re strong. They’re mighty. They’re powerful creatures. They are able to do so much more than mere humans can. Yet, they’re also flawed characters in every way.

Thor is from the Norse sagas. He is the son of Odin the Wise. Odin gave his eye in order to have wisdom. He had two sons, Thor and Loki. Loki is the trickster god, always trying to thwart Thor, always trying to bring him down a peg or two.

Thor’s issue is his pride. In fact, in the Marvel comics, and in the original Thor movie, that’s what brought him to earth in the first place, his pride, his hubris. He saw himself as great and mighty. But that’s not what a true ruler is to be. A true ruler is to be humble and compassionate, wise and understanding. Thor learns that and soon is able to return to Asgard because of it.

So what does this have to do with spirituality? Thor and Loki are flawed characters. They are flawed and have their own issues. Thor is redeemable and learns humility. Loki doesn’t seem to. In fact, in The Avengers, it’s because of him that issues arise. I don’t know what happens in The Darkworld , but I’d love to see how his relationship with his brother works out and if Loki is humbled or not.

That’s the thing about spirituality, it is supposed to be humbling. Thor and Loki are prideful, filled with hubris. They are their own downfall.

With spirituality, true spirituality, we are to be humble. We are to take on the very role of the most spiritual person there is–Jesus. Jesus is more than just the most spiritual person ever, he is God himself, God in the flesh, the second person of the trinity. And we can learn so much from him.

Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant…he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death–even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8

That is true humility and spirituality. That is something that Thor would and could never do. Thor was the son of Odin. But he wasn’t Odin himself. He wasn’t equal with Odin. Jesus is equal to the Father and is the second person of the trinity. Jesus didn’t see it something to be used to his own advantage as Thor did. Instead, Jesus humbled himself and became a servant.

If you want true spirituality, become a servant. Think as Jesus thought and then act as Jesus acted. Become obedient to God. Become obedient to his desires and purpose in your life. You will live as Jesus lived–in true humility.

Thor learns humility but he doesn’t learn to become a servant. He becomes worthy to wield his hammer, Mjolnir (moyl-neer). He defends the weak and the powerless. But he doesn’t learn to be a true servant. He doesn’t learn true humility in the sense of Jesus’ humility.

Jesus’ humility is to make himself nothing in order to glorify God the Father. He makes himself nothing because equality with God isn’t something he wishes to use to his own advantage. Thor’s still using himself as Odin’s son to his advantage.

Now here’s the thing. Thor eventually returns to Asgard. He eventually learns what it means to be a ruler. Jesus already knew what it meant to be king. He’s the King of kings and the Lord of lords. And he does so much more than Thor ever could. Jesus is at the right hand of God the Father and prays for us. Intercedes for us–speaks on our behalf.

True spirituality is knowing this. Knowing that you have one who speaks on your behalf to God. Knowing that you live in grace and power of God not in your own power but His. True spirituality is knowing from where it comes–God through Jesus.

And so, we can be spiritual, we can be able to have true spirituality when we follow Jesus and act as Jesus acted and live as he lived. When we think as he thought, we can live as he lived and live a spirit filled life.
