I’ve been on a spiritual kick lately. Ever since I learned that in my area 46.8% consider themselves spiritual but only 17.8% consider it important to attend a religious service. That’s a huge gap. And it bothers me. Spirituality is important. We are spiritual people. We are made to be spiritual. There is something in us that drives us to be spiritual people. Even Atheism is a form of spirituality even though it denies a god, it still demands a belief system in something.
But spirituality is more than just a cool tat (in Chinese, Hebrew or Greek). It’s more than just being in tune with the spiritualness of it all. It’s more than just being and existing. It’s more than just emptying of oneself and allowing it to be a meditative moment of pure nothingness. When many people think of being spiritual, they think of being and living a life where you are a good person and what you do good will in turn be good back to you. Or even there are some who look to the Jedi of Star Wars as what it means to be spiritual. Some look to monks of various religions and want to know what it means to be spiritual.
Spirituality is more than that. It is stronger than that. When you want to be truly spiritual, you must know that you need to have a constant companion. When people feel that they must be spiritual by emptying out oneself into nothing in order to be spiritual, it leaves room for nothing. Instead of being nothing, be filled with something. And that something is the power of the Holy Spirit. That something is Jesus, savior divine. That something is the ever presence of God the Father himself.
If you want to be spiritual, allow yourself to be connected to the God of the universe. There is no greater spirituality than that. Many times people want to be one with the world. They want to be one with creation. Isn’t it more spiritual to be connected to the Creator of that creation than just creation itself.
I’ve done some studying of the Lakota spirituality. A spirituality that I greatly respect. A spirituality which I will not one day fully completely understand. But even with the Lakota spirituality, there is a desire to be connected with the Great Spirit. There is something in that spirituality that desires to be connected to the creator of creation.
Jesus is that.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-2
And Jesus, who through all things were made, can be and is our constant companion. When we truly want to be spiritual, we focus on Jesus. We focus on who he is and the power and grace that can be found in him.
Too many times we try to be spiritual to deal with our past and with our struggles with the future. Jesus is our constant companion in the present. Our past is done and gone in Jesus and the future is in his hands.
When you have Jesus as your constant companion, you’re able to live in the now of his presence. You are able to live in the now of his being with you. This is done through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is present with you through his spirit. You can’t get more spiritual than that.
So, you want to be spiritual? You want to know what it means to be spiritual? Then come to Jesus and experience what true spirituality is. Experience Jesus and you will experience true spirituality.
