I once heard a quote attributed to CS Lewis saying “You’re not a body with a soul but a soul with a body.” The first time I heard of that I started thinking, “Dude, that’s like a body/soul dichotomy going on here.” Yeah. I use big words when I talk with myself sometimes. But seriously, there’s this idea that body and soul are separate and therefore are treated separately. And that can be farther from the truth.
Now, I’m not saying that CS Lewis is wrong at all. Dude’s a great author (and yes, I just called him “Dude”). At the same time we have to look at the fact that we were created to be souls and bodies. Adam and eve were made in the likeness of God. In Genesis 1:26 God made humanity in His image, male and female He made them. God made humanity to be like Him. And we read in John 4 that God is Spirit and we are to worship him in spirit and in truth. Wow. Some totally trippy stuff here.
We are souls. We are bodies. We are personalities. We are made up of heart, mind, soul and strength.
We read in the Old Testament:
“Hear O Israel: The Lord your God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5
In the Gospel of Mark, the word mind is added. We are full complete human beings. There is no dichotomy going on here. No split between them. But all are one like God is one. God is three in one and we too are made into one complete holistic creatures.
Yet we are souls with bodies. We are souls who dwell in this mortal coil.
“For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, sot hat what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.” 2 Corinthians 5:4
Paul is saying that we are but tents. But bodies housing an eternal soul. Yet we will one day be fully clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Our bodies will one day be perfect where right now they are imperfect, weak, and fragile.
And so we live this spiritual life. We are but tents living out with souls holistically connected to each other. We are messed up but will one day be made complete. What do we do in the meantime with this spiritual life? We are to live the future today in the now. Right now live today as if you are truly living as fully part of the resurrection. With the resurrection we will be made perfect. This tent, as Paul calls it, will be made perfect. And we are to live today in Christ, fully aware that though we are imperfect, we can live in perfection in Jesus.
To tell the truth, many people consider themselves spiritual. And if that works for you, great. But true spirituality is being connected to Jesus by the Holy Spirit. True spirituality is living out the power of the resurrection each day. True spirituality is living each day anew in Jesus by the Holy Spirit.
So we live this spiritual life. If you want to be truly spiritual, be connected to Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
How can we do this? How can we be truly spiritual.
We need prayerful dependence. We need to prayerfully be connected to God through Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to constantly today approach the throne of God. Each day is new and each day we are in need of being in God’s presence trusting in Jesus to hold our hands through it all.
We need to melt into God’s Word. Reading scripture is so important. It is how we come to know God, it is how we come to know Jesus. It is how we are moved by the Holy Spirit. It is one of the ways in which God speaks to us. But melt into it. Let it become part of you. Let it become part of who you are. Internalize it. Meditate on it. Think of it. Let is dwell in your richly.
To live this spiritual life, you need to walk each day new. Each day has its own problems. And each day you can trust in God through those problems. When we worry about the next day during this day, we place our trust in ourselves rather than in God. So trust God today with the problems of today. Knowing that he will give you just want you need for today.
Live this spiritual life. You are made up of mind, body, soul, and strength. You are made whole and complete through Jesus. If you truly wish to be spiritual, then live this spiritual life.
