I’ve done it in the past. Maybe you’ve done it as well. I’ve forgotten to take out the garbage. Our garbage day is Fridays. And there are times where I just plumb forget to take it out. There are sometimes where I’m flying out the garage door can in hand trying to make sure I get it out in time, hoping that they hadn’t already driven by. There are other times where I just forget until later that afternoon and then the garbage has to sit there all week long.
And when that happens, it piles up. It piles up and up and begins to stink. It begins to stink and gets all in the way in the garage. It’s not pretty to say the least.
When garbage piles up, it’s a lot like unconfessed sins. What do I mean about that? What I mean is that there are sins which we just don’t confess. We’re too afraid to. We’re too worried to. We want to hold on to them and keep them. Why? Because they’re ours. They are our dirty little secrets, our dark temptations, our secret sins that we don’t want to see the light of day.
Yet when we hold on to them, they do something. They find their way out into the light. They find their way out of the deep and onto the surface. It may not take long or it may take a long time, but eventually our unconfessed sins find their way out to the public. What we want kept private won’t stay private for long.
Our unconfessed sins trip us up. They entangle us. They keep us from properly following Jesus. They get in the way. All that garbage that accumulates in our lives when we don’t confess what we struggle with, what temptations we have, what secret sins we keep. And when we don’t confess, we begin to put Jesus at a distance. We begin to keep him at arms length. And that’s not good. And then soon we begin to stop listening to the sweet whispers of the Holy Spirit, too afraid that our sins will be found out.
What do we do?
“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1
How do we do this?
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.” Hebrews 12:2
The most important part of our faith journey is to keep our eyes on Jesus. We are to run the race marked out for us. Keep in step with Jesus, fix your eyes on him. When you do this, you can bring to him all the things that you’re dealing with, struggling with. You can bring to him all the things that are secret and hurting or bringing you down further into the garbage.
And when we do this, we find forgiveness. When we do this, we find refuge from the refuse.
What garbage do you need to take out? What garbage is getting in the way of your faith journey? Take out the garbage and fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
