From something you take, something else must be given in exchange. This is a quick summation of the Law of Equivalent Exchange from the manga/TV show Full Metal Alchemist (just a note, when I reference the TV show, I’m referencing the much cooler Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, not that goofy thing from early 2000’s). To tell the truth Full Metal Alchemist is somewhat Dark. Two kids, so mourning the loss of their mother try to bring her back to life. Yet it goes horribly wrong and they bear the scars of the incident.
The Law of Equivalent Exchange states that in order to create something, you must give something else up. Yet what can you give up for a soul? You can’t. And so their journey beings from their scars and their pain. They live by the motto to keep moving forward. They do not forget the past, in fact it at times haunts them, but at the same time it fuels them to keep moving forward. They move forward because of the scars of the past. They move forward because they are using their scars of the past to help others.
And it is a long journey. It is a long journey to self redemption. It is a long journey of self discovery. It is a long journey of self forgiveness. It is a journey where they bring people into their lives that they must trust in to help them get to their goal.
This being Friday on Spiritual Musclehad, you know that there’s more to this.
To be honest, we’re all on a journey. We’re all on a journey finding out who we are. We’re all on this journey walking away from scars of the past, of mistakes, of blunders. We are all struggling with the things we’ve done that we know we shouldn’t have and the things we didn’t do but know we should have. We struggle with the would’ves/couldve’s of life. And to be honest it is a struggle. There are so many things we wish we could take back. There are so many things we wish we could raise back to life again. Yet what would be the price of this? What could be the price that we would pay? Should we gain the whole world and lose our souls in the process just to make things right again?
We all have scars. Yet there are three scars that will help heal us, help us in our journey of self discovery, help us in our journey of redemption and forgiveness, help us in our journey so that we’re not alone.
As Jesus died upon the cross, he had a nail pounded into each hand. He had a nail pounded into his feet to keep him there. He hung upon the cross and died for the forgiveness of sins. What a price to pay. The Law of Equivalent Exchange says that for something to be made new, something else must be given. In Jesus, you are able to be made new because he died. More than that though, because he was raised to life and is with us today (please, again, no Zombie Jesus jokes).
So, you have been given the ability of a new life, a new identity, a road to redemption and a road with others to walk with you during this journey. Will you take it?
